When he wasn’t designing modern furniture or urban landmarks, the legendary architect Alvar Aalto had his hand in glassware. Enduring favorites to this day, his pieces are still produced by expert Finnish glassblowers at the iittala factory near Helsinki. Finlandia complements the fluid style of the original Aalto vase, whose undulating form alludes to the untamed shorelines of Finland’s many lakes. The modern classic is perfectly suited for simple spring flowers like tulips and lilacs, but Aalto himself would have encouraged you to experiment.
“Lasting design against throwawayism” is the core philosophy of the home design brand iittala. Founded in 1881, the Finnish company has been partnering since the 1920s with Scandinavian and international designers of note, including Alvar Aalto, Tapio Wirkkala, Antonio Citterio and Renzo Piano.
