A series begun in the 1949, Homage to the Square was, in a sense, the apotheosis of Josef Albers’s art and theory. Made using unmixed paints taken straight from the tube, Albers applied pigment to canvas with a palette knife in a form that resembled nesting squares. With colors chosen because of their subtle play off of one another, Albers’s aim was to create an effect of effortlessness and harmony, an effect that came at the cost of hours of experimentation.
