Having started as a NYC street artist in the late ’70s, by 1986 the then famous Keith Haring was keen on bridging the gap between low and high art, and so opened his SoHo boutique, Pop Shop. Selling shirts, hats, and other items emblazoned with his unique icons, Haring saw Pop Shop as a tool for the democratization of art—a theme that brought him and Andy Warhol together. The Andy Mouse Series compounds the concept of “pop icon,” creating an image that speaks to the connections between art, its dissemination, and capitalism, all with a requisite Warholian whiff of irony.
