There’s a quality in the photography of Berlin-based Matthias Heiderich that abstracts the concrete world around us. He accentuates line, form, and color in his compositions, transforming a site that might otherwise be mundane (i.e. the side of a building or a row of electrical lines) into an object of pure aesthetic appreciation. Part of his Ost Series, Berlin 9 Bent Building presents an undulating—and slightly disorienting—roofline set against a stark, multi-tonal sky that runs from teal at the top to near white by the bottom.

Based in Berlin, photographer Matthias Heiderich has shot urban landscapes for years, and is on his way to mastering the hard-fought principles of photography: color, light, and form. His distinctive visual language, based around abstracted compositions and composed color palettes, creates arresting architectural portraits that breathe life into inanimate subjects.
