“From a design perspective,” says Michael Turri about The Beta Bloc Starter Set, “I chose to explore the physical principle of Brownian Motion—the seemingly random movement of particles suspended in a liquid or gas.” The Starter Set includes a custom electronic control box, an AC adapter and one dimmable electroluminescent wire glass Beta Bloc light sculpture—all the components you need to become a bona fide lighting guru. “The aluminum control knobs are from the ‘80s,” Turri tells us, “and they’re awesome.” Weird science!
The control box included in the Starter Kit can accommodate up to two more Beta Blocs. One Beta bloc is included. (Electroluminescent wire never dies, but becomes dimmer over time. Half-life of the wire is 3,000 hours—achieved only after 3,000 hours of use at maximum setting). Dimming the light for a more subtle effect extends the life of the lamp. Like neon, there’s an audible high-pitched hum to all electroluminescent lamps. The lower the brightness, the less noticeable the hum.
Glass block: 6" x 6" x 4". Control Box: 1.25" x 3.75" x 4.75”. Control box can power up to 3 lamps simultaneously. It turns on and off and controls brightness levels. Turning on the control box without a lamp plugged in can damage the electronics.
