Perplexed as to why graphic design is always confined to the digital realm, designer Michael van Heerden fleshed out his ideas in physical, tactile form for a series called Wood As A Graphic Design Medium—a project that won him an award for Most Creative Stand at Design Indaba 2012. This modern piece of wall art, The Building Blocks of Africa, is a wood sculpture that imagines Africa as a series of colorful, Tetris-inspired geometric shapes.
