In 1978, graphic designer Paul Rowan made his own window shade. Impressed with his handiwork, he teamed up with Les Mandelbaum to start Umbra (meaning “shade” in Latin). This line of clever and casual home goods includes the work of top designers—like Karim Rashid’s IDEA Award-winning OH! chair and GARBINO garbage can, which has a place in MoMA’s permanent collection.
