Named after the community in Santa Monica, California, where artist Richard Diebenkorn (1922–1993) lived next to friend and fellow artist Sam Francis, the Ocean Park series—created during the latter part of Diebenkorn’s career—became his most enduring achievement. Undoubtedly influenced by select works produced by the great Henri Matisse, Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park paintings bear a resemblance to aerial landscapes and reconnect him to his early work in color field painting.
