Artistic pioneer Anni Albers was surrounded by rules and she defied all of them. Born in Berlin in 1899 to an affluent family, she eschewed the comforts of her upbringing for art school, entering the Bauhaus where she studied weaving and met her husband, Josef Albers. The couple emigrated the U.S. in 1933, where their work continued to be driven by inexhaustible experimentation with color and technique. In 1949, Anni became the first textile artist to have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. She turned to printmaking in the 1970s, and her patterns were realized in a new medium that captured her strong graphic sensibility.
