From Los Angeles to Louisiana, Tokyo to Timbuktu—there is always a season for flies. Even in Finland, which is wherethis funny, functional Fly Swatter originates. Conceived by Finnish designer Tarmo Likki, it is made of sustainably harvested Finnish birch and topped with a premium-leather “swat.” Of course, the first thing you’ll notice is that this bit of winged weaponry looks exactly like the enemy insect, which is right in line with Essey’s principle of “symbolic functionalism” (connecting shape with purpose to visually communicate an object’s utility).

In nature, shapes are defined by their function. Essey aims to apply that concept to design. Founder John Brauer’s philosophy is known as “symbolic functionalism”—the belief that an object’s form should represent its function. The Bin Bin crumpled wastebasket, winner of three international design awards, is a prime example of the success of this idea.
