British-born artist David Hockney’s career took root in California, where he moved in the ’60s. That decade yielded his iconic series capturing the idyllic nature of L.A. living—the sunny, sensual quality of which is often noted for its homoerotic undercurrent. Rejecting the sole designation of Pop artist, Hockney also built a subdued portfolio of portraits and—on the other end of the creative spectrum—set designs for such grand venues as The Metropolitan Opera. The artist has recently dabbled in digital mediums, even releasing a collection of iPad drawings in 2014.
