While laser-cutting is often used to create intricate patterns and elaborate details, Brazilian designer Olavo Machado Neto uses the technique to achieve a simple, equally transfixing result. He made this chess set in tribute to the famed Bauhaus-style version designed by Josef Hartwig. Neto references the shapes of Hartwig’s minimalist wood pieces with thin, laser-cut aluminum forms, which look curiously two-dimensional.
