Born into an aristocratic French family, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) was never the same after breaking both his legs as an adolescent. At 5’1” tall, he was known for his self-deprecating ways, and became one of the most famous of the Post-Impressionist painters. An outsider’s insider, Lautrec’s interest, not unlike Warhol almost 100 years later, was to explore and depict the contemporary nightlife of Paris, painting dancers, prostitutes, artists, and performers in realist scenes that lent a humanist’s depth to these slaves of spectacle.
