Pyramids, angels, humans, dogs; the icons employed by Keith Haring were intentionally timeless, chosen in large part for their use throughout the ages. Having drawn since childhood, Haring prized the creation of what amounted to his own pictorial language, using and reusing this infinitely malleable series of icons in arrangements meant not only to express, but to communicate with the viewer. A master in the use of positive and negative space, his highly influential work draws on a Pop Art palette and became more overtly political after his diagnosis with AIDS in 1988.
