A picture says a thousand words quite literally in this impressive poster. This map details the streets and highways, parks, neighborhoods, and physical features of Minneapolis using nothing but type. Lake Calhoun and the curving Mississippi River are depicted, as well as the University of Minnesota and other institutions in words and letters. Every single piece of type was manually placed, a process that took hundreds of hours to complete. This full-color digital print is ideal for anyone who appreciates the art of the written word.
Founded by David Heyman and Ben Sheesley, Ph.D., Axis Maps is rooted in the cartography traditions at the University of Wisconsin. Unframed. Everything in this print was created manually in Adobe Illustrator, from entering names over an OpenStreetMap image, to nudging text along curved paths to depict flowing water, to selectively erasing text to create a woven street pattern.
