George Condo calls his style “Artificial Realism.” He draws on a myriad of classical influences: Goya, Velazquez, Picasso, Manet. Then he makes them his own: dismantling Playboy Bunnies, re-arranging the face of Queen Elizabeth, and inventing a series of grotesque “imaginary portraits.” If that sounds weird, it is. But this unique painterly language has earned the American artist a cultish but eclectic lot of fans, like William S. Borroughs and Kayne West (both of whom have collaborated with Condo).
