Long-ago explorers in Africa wore hats made out of pith, a cork-like material, that they soaked in water to help keep themselves cool. Babatunde took this traditional helmet design—which could easily represent imperialism and exploitation—and fused it with a symbol of native Africa by adding colorful wax-printed fabric designs.
