An important bridge between the Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s and the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) went from Black Mountain College—breeding ground of American Expressionism—to the streets of New York, sharing the proverbial stage with artists like Warhol and Lichtenstein. Using a combination of found materials and original embellishments to produce wholly original art in dialogue with society, Rauschenberg created work that is ever reactionary and often critical of the art world and consumer culture.
