Mark Rothko is considered one of the original masters of Abstract Expressionism. His large-scale paintings, known as “multiforms,” were meant to explore and emphasize the experiential relationship between the viewer and art object. Nothing short of revelatory, his awe-inspiring, iconoclastic work shows a darkness that alludes to his unstable temperament. Sadly, in the end Rothko seemed to grow more depressed as his celebrity increased, eventually committing suicide at the age of 66.
