Images d'Orient combines the rich heritage of traditional Mediterranean crafts with modern materials and a contemporary color palette. Inspired by the flooring in eastern Mediterranean residences during the 1930s and ’40s, this pair of placemats is made of PVC. Covered in ceramic tiles of various patterns, the floors were unrivaled for their broad repertoire of colors and arabesque motifs. The juxtaposed tiles created a gigantic picture, resulting in their nickname of sejjadeh, or carpet.
Images d’Orient was founded in 2000 by brother-and-sister team Charbel Raphaël and Peggy Raphaël Dabar after a trip to their native Lebanon. Using PVC as its chief material, the brand’s contemporary collection of housewares honors the Mediterranean’s cultural heritage by recalling the distinctive history of the region’s traditional crafts and art forms.
