This Striped Butcher Block is a socially responsible surface. Beneath its beautifully grained stripes of oak and maple is the story of a person living in poverty, selected by Would-Works to complete this project in exchange for money toward a financial goal—like a new pair of eyeglasses. Finished in mineral oil and beeswax, this entertaining piece offers sophistication with a sense of purpose.
Would-Works gives impoverished people of Los Angeles the opportunity to work for money toward a financial goal, which they help to establish prior to the project. After successfully hand-finishing and packaging the board, the artisan receives a certification in basic work skills, and Would-Works provides payment toward the goal.
