A Frankfurt-born artist and pupil of Max Beckmann and Willi Baumeister, Albert Urban held his first gallery show at the age 19. One of the many modernist painters condemned by the Nazis, he was forbidden to paint in Germany and fled to the U.S., where he continued to create work throughout the course of his life. Known as a master technician, Urban was described in 1942 as “a painter's painter, whose brilliant color, vibrant forms, swiftly spontaneous design, and general technical inventiveness must win the respect of all informed scholars of painting."
