Ayllu means "community" in the ancient Peruvian language of Aymara. In these candy-colored chandelier earrings, an ayllu of thinly shaved tagua seeds dangle from sterling silver-plated French hooks. The earrings are handmade by Mujus in Peru.
2” total length. As no two seeds are alike, each Mujus piece may differ slightly.
The tagua seed comes from a palm tree that grows in the Amazon. When ripe, the tagua fruit falls to the ground and is gathered and dried for a period of up to eight months, after which they become hard and ivory-like.
Designer Paola Delgado splits her time between Brooklyn and Peru, where she manages the handmade production of Mujus’ designs. Its eco-chic accessories are crafted from tagua seed and its production helps create social change for impoverished communities in Peru.
