One of Sori Yanagi’s most enduring designs, the Butterfly Stool fuses Eastern aesthetics with the wood-shaping techniques developed by the Eameses. Made from two identical pieces of molded plywood held together by a brass stretcher, the curvaceous, atmospheric seat is reminiscent of a pair of wings (though it also conjures a torii arch). Yanagi’s classic stool became an international sensation after earning an award at La Triennale di Milano in 1957. It now resides in MoMA’s permanent collection.
Designed 1954. Vitra makes innovative contemporary and classic furniture for the home, office, and public spaces.
