French designer Jean Prouvé conceived his Standard Chair with weighty issues in mind. Since seats take the most strain on their back legs, it has thin, tubular steel piping in front and thick, hollow sections in back—passing the tension onto the floor. First produced in the 1930s, this modern classic typifies Prouvé’s sensible, utilitarian approach to design.
Designed 1934/50. Seat height: 17.75”.
