Media 0 for listing Oba Eweka II Bronze Bust

Description

The bronze sculpture depicts Oba Eweka II of Benin, who reigned from 1914 to 1933. Born Prince Aiguobasimwin Ovonramwen, he restored the Benin monarchy after the British punitive expedition of 1897. His father, Oba Ovonramwen, was exiled, and during his absence, the monarchy was nearly extinct. Eweka II rebuilt the royal compound, re-established traditional structures, and re-establish the craft and guild system. Despite facing false accusations of human sacrifice, he focused on reviving Benin’s cultural heritage and artistic traditions until his death in 1933.
