Description

The church of Agia Sophia in Gournitsa is located in the village that the locals call Gournitsa near Old Kardamili of Western Mani and is 42 kilometers away from Kalamata.

The church of Agia Sophia in Gournitsa is built on the outskirts of the village, on the edge of the hill with view over the plains of Kardamyli. It is of cruciform style and is made of limestone. The fine lines and the double dome impress the visitor. It was a monastery in the past while an inscription says that the church was built in 1630 and was painted in 1700 by Georgios Makrymallis, a famous painter.
