Description

According to the myth told by Hesiod, Prometheus brought fire to people, even though Zeus had forbidden it. As punishment for his disobedience, he was chained to a rock in the Caucasus and attacked daily by an eagle that feasted on Prometheus’ liver. Hundrieser captured this suffering in the architectural sculpture: Prometheus, tied to the rock, with tense muscles and a stoic look, awaits the next attack of the eagle that is watching him. He is mourned by two Oceanids, daughters of Oceanus, creators of the rivers and the sea. After bombs hit the university building during World War II, the fountain was only preserved in fragments and was restored in 1987.
