Planorbis gastropods: These freshwater air-breathing snails, exist as fossils & living forms, belong to the family Planorbidae, part of the larger class of gastropods. Found in sedimentary rocks (limestone, shale) from Paleozoic & Mesozoic eras (~541-66 million years ago). Shell diameter: few mm to cm, coiled shape, ribbing/striations. Studied by paleontologists for insights into ancient freshwater ecosystems.
