Tentative back story: this person was in a car without a seat belt on. When the car crashed, he flew out through the windshield and got extreme brain-exposing road rash after landing in the middle of the street. Of course that's just one of many possible back stories, and the corpse is suitable for a wide range of scenarios, with or without zombification.
