The sculpted group of the Flight to Egypt is notable for its lack of anatomical realism and shows the simple, roughly carved figures of the Virgin Mary and Child in the foreground, contrasting with the rather puny appearance of Jospeh and the donkey. Folk sculptors, who were often self-taught and tended to produce work intermittently.
