Description

Ardea cinerea Linnaeus, 1758 Pelecaniformes, Ardeidae

A relatively large fish-eating bird, this is a common resident in Singapore that is typically solitary outside of its breeding season. They are usually found in mangroves or coastal wetlands, but can sometimes be sighted at reservoirs, parks with water bodies and even in canals.

The heron was exhibited as part of the “Death By Man” exhibition at the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum at the National University of Singapore. The exhibition focused on animals that have been lost and animals that may soon be lost due to human activities and rapid urbanisation.
