Media 0 for listing Igbo-Ukwu Bronze Snail, 19th TO 20th Century AD

Description

An intricate bronze sculpture representing a snail. The shell is detailed with raised ridges, parallel lines, crosshatchings, and granulations typical of Igbo Ukwu art. At the pointed end of the shell, three small frogs are depicted, adding to the elaborate design. The surface of the shell also features relief sculptures of flies, which are commonly found in Igbo Ukwu bronze works. These detailed patterns and motifs are reminiscent of scarification patterns seen on high-ranking Igbo men, indicating the sculpture’s association with the aristocracy of Igbo-Ukwu. This object showcases the artistic diversity and cultural significance of Igbo bronze craftsmanship.
