Carved in ebony wood, this fertility doll, known as an Akua’ba, is a ritual tool among the Ashanti people of Ghana. A matrilineal society where possession and power are inherited from mothers, fertility is of crucial importance to social order. Akua’ba are worn on the backs of women hoping to conceive a child or protect a growing fetus. This example displays the signature disk head and long neck of fertility dolls throughout western Africa.

Fair vintage condition with natural wear on the surface. Cracked on the arm.
