Dating back to mid-19th century Japan, gyotaku is a form of printing that uses a real fish to create a print or rubbing. Each piece is produced when a fish is laid on a wood bench and painted on one side with sumi ink. A piece of paper or textile is then applied to the inked side to create a print. Created by Dwight Hwang, this one-of-a-kind, original rice paper rubbing depicts a buffalo carp.

Founded in 2011 by Southern California artist Dwight Hwang, Fishing For Gyotaku presents the Japanese art of gyotaku, a traditional art that uses fish to make beautiful, accurate prints. Used by fisherman to record their catch, gyotaku printing—which Hwang learned while living in Japan—creates images more beautiful than a photo and more eco-friendly than taxidermy.
