The Hermes Rocket (sometimes referred to as the Hermes Baby) was born in Switzerland in the late 1930s, and it became an icon of its age, until production stopped in the mid 1960s. What distinguishes this model from others is its sleek, narrow shape—which seemed to prophesied the arrival of laptop computers. Its lightweight, minimalist Swiss design and sophisticated construction made it one of the first truly portable typewriters. John Steinbeck used one during his war journalist days and his Hermes Rocket is featured in Monterey, California's John Steinbeck Museum.
