This film is an intimate portrait of Joan Mitchell’s independent spirit and groundbreaking art. It weaves interviews with the acerbic Mitchell and other painters and critics together with her stunning pictures. One of the great abstract painters of the Twentieth Century, Mitchell was a part of New York’s dynamic Abstract Expressionist scene along with fellow painters Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning, as well as poets Frank O’Hara and John Ashbery. She later moved to Paris where she was part of a circle of friends that included Pierre Matisse and Samuel Beckett.
