The photography of Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) broke down walls and blurred boundaries in ways that mingled the sacred and profane. A photographer obsessed with the depths of black in his imagery, his subject matter (often including nudity or fetishism) raised the obscene to the level of an aesthetic object, reforming the concept in the process and teasing out links between sexuality, mysticism, and the signifiers of organized religion.
