Marlstones are absorptive and may stain. This type of rock is found only in Southern Pakistan and is composed of silicate muds washed down from the Himalaya mountains and cemented by lime from the Tethys seaway, the precursor of today's Indian Ocean. Underground waters bearing dissolved iron oxide moved through fractures in the marlstone, creating wood grain-like patterns called Liesegang banding.Country of Origin:
